in plain english, why is acorn so darn important to know about?

1) acorn has been notoriously known for using intimidation tactics on banks to get them to give subprime loans to people with poor credit. this activity (called ‘direct action’ by community organizers) is the bedrock of the current financial crisis we find ourselves in. yes, acorn contributed in a BIG WAY to the crash of the american economy.

2) acorn is suspected of voter fraud in at least 12 states and the fbi is currently investigating this.

so, again what does acorn’s intimidation techniques on banks and widespread acorn voter fraud have to do with senator barack obama?

first, barack obama’s intimate ties to acorn, which included training acorn leaders, leaders who engaged in ‘direct action‘ intimidation tactics on banks to force them to give subprime loans to people with poor credit (the cause of our current financial crisis), means that obama actually contributed to the current subprime financial crisis. call it lack of knowledge, lack of judgement, or deliberately planned .. who knows. there’s even evidence obama was no stranger to ‘direct action‘ intimidation techniques himself.

secondly, concerning acorn’s widespread voter registration fraud, all that can be said here is that barack obama closely aligned himself with acorn his entire career. he made friends. he gained followers. he networked. it’s not rocket science to figure out that obama organized a strong grassroots network through acorn before his polical career began. and this close tie to acorn continues to this day. why is acorn responsible for widespread voter registration fraud this election? is it misguided zeal on the part of devoted followers? who taught them, who inspires them? why is acorn voter registration fraud prevalent in key swing states? connect the dots.

america it’s time to see through obama’s economic fasod: 1) he trained acorn leaders, who in turn vigorously intimidated banks into issuing subprime loans to people with poor credit (does that ring of socialism?), which in turn ultimately was the cause of the financial crisis we find ourselves in, and 2) obama wants to take hard working american’s money (raise their taxes) and ‘spread the wealth around’ to others less fortunate. raising taxes, especially during rough economic times, is never the way to promote the vital growth of small businesses. a ‘spread the wealth around’ policy is not a capitalistic, american dream way of government, it’s a SOCIALIST way of government, which uses people’s hard earned money against their will, sort of like penalizing financial success.

joe the plumber

ohio plumber joe wurzelbacher tells barack obama that he’s about to buy a company that is worth about $250,000. joe said he lives in a neighborhood of houses that range from $90,000 to $140,000 in value .. clearly middle class. he says when he finally does finish buying the company, he will continue living in that neighborhood. joe went on to say that obama’s tax hike will hurt the growth of his small business. he tells fox news’ neal cavuto that obama hold’s a socialist viewpoint:

“joe, did he win you over?”

“a no not at all. his answer actually scared me even more.”

“how so?”

“he said he wants to distribute wealth, and i mean, i’m not trying to make statements here but i mean that’s kind of a socialist viewpoint. i, you know, i worked for that. you know, it’s my discretion who i want to give my money to. it’s not the government’s that decide that i make a little too much and so i need to share it with other people. i just .. that’s not the american dream.“

the debate

in wednesday night’s final presidential debate, senator mccain used joe’s encounter with obama to illustrate clear differences between how his economic plan differs from obama’s:

“you know, when sen. obama ended up his conversation with joe the plumber – we need to spread the wealth around. in other words, we’re going to take joe’s money, give it to sen. obama, and let him spread the wealth around.

i want joe the plumber to spread that wealth around. you told him you wanted to spread the wealth around.

the whole premise behind sen. obama’s plans are class warfare, let’s spread the wealth around. i want small businesses – and by the way, the small businesses that we’re talking about would receive an increase in their taxes right now.

who – why would you want to increase anybody’s taxes right now? why would you want to do that, anyone, anyone in america, when we have such a tough time, when these small business people, like joe the plumber, are going to create jobs, unless you take that money from him and spread the wealth around.” (source)

senator mccain went on to say: “joe wants to buy the business that he has been in for all of these years, worked 10, 12 hours a day. and he wanted to buy the business but he looked at your tax plan and he saw that he was going to pay much higher taxes,” mccain challenged obama.

“you were going to put him in a higher tax bracket which was going to increase his taxes, which was going to cause him not to be able to employ people, which joe was trying to realize the american dream,” mccain said.

mccain then looked directly into the television camera and said: “joe, i want to tell you, i’ll not only help you buy that business that you worked your whole life for and i’ll keep your taxes low and i’ll provide available and affordable health care for you and your employees. and i will not stand for a tax increase on small business income.” (source)

socialism

a red flag should be raised at obama’s economic proposals, as they eerily look like the economic system called socialism. socialism is defined as: “1) any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy. 2) the stage in marxist-leninist theory intermediate between capitalism and communism, in which collective ownership of the economy under the dictatorship of the proletariat has not yet been successfully achieved.” (case study: hugo chavez of venezuela.)

sound familiar? you work hard but because you don’t need as much as poorer folk, a new socialist obama policy will redistribute your wealth, or as obama puts it ‘spread the wealth around’. if i’m not mistaken, socialism would promote laziness and create long lines of people waiting for their free government check supplied by taxing those making $250,000 or more. that’s right, small businesses at that level are more difficult to expand, while at the same time those making under $250,000 have less incentive to work because the socialist program of obama will ‘take care of them’. what this is really doing is eroding the moral fiber of our country.

it may also be worth taking a glance at the communist manefesto, and what advances obama has made to a transition from a capitalistic society to that of a socialist one. remember, socialism is the intermediate stage between capitalism and communism:

1. abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
2. a heavy progressive or graduated income tax.

(FLAG – obama’s tax policy: taxing those with incomes above $250,000 (penalizing success), tax hikes on capital gains and dividends .. as a matter of record obama voted 94 times to raise taxes, including raising taxes on those making $42,000/year)

3. abolition of all right of inheritance.
4. confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
5. centralization of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly.

(FLAG – this was set in motion by obama through his training of ACORN staff, who put into motion the current financial crisis by intimidating banks to issue subprime loans .. our financial institutions because of the bailout are now much more centralized though mergers and temporary government control of our financial markets)

6. centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the state.
7. extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the state; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
8. equal liability of all to labour. establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
9. combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country, by a more equable distribution of the population over the country.

(FLAG – concerning no walls or distinction between countries, races, tribes, natives and immigrants is similar to obama’s vision of being a ‘citizen of the world‘ and ‘one world government‘, and most disturbing is his new ‘spread the wealth around’ global poverty act bill {see below})

10. free education for all children in public schools. abolition of children’s factory labour in its present form. combination of education with industrial production.

keep in mind the communist manifesto is not done all at once, but is trickled in little by little. look however at the ‘flagged’ points and you decide for yourself in what direction senator obama wants to take our country.

the global poverty act

is that what you want america? would obama stop there? oh let me tell you, NO. last summer senator obama introduced the ‘the global poverty act‘ to congress, which has been passed in the house and currently awaits approval in the senate. the global poverty act is a tax of 0.7% of the american gdp (gross domestic product), to be given to the united nations and distributed to third world countries in an attempt to eradicate 50% of the world’s poverty. virtually no one knows about this, and yet it will cost americans 845 billion dollars over the next 13 years. what kind of insane agenda for our economy is obama working on? (let it be noted this has nothing to do with the recent 700+ billion dollar subprime bailout .. these are two totally separate activities.) the heritage foundation calls the global poverty act “superfluous, misguided, and dangerous” in the article the global poverty act: the wrong track for u.s. aid policy. glen beck gives a good picture of the global poverty act here:

what is damaging to the obama campaign is twofold.

FIRST, according to this article, obama trained acorn leaders in yearly leadership training sessions. these are the same people chicago acorn’s madeline talbott led with ‘direct action’ techniques, an “‘organizers‘ term for their militant tactics of intimidation and disruption” in forcing banks to issue subprime loans to uncreditworthy customers. as described by national review contributing editor stanley kurtz:

“what exactly does a ‘community organizer’ do? barack obama’s rise has left many americans asking themselves that question. here’s a big part of the answer: community organizers intimidate banks into making high-risk loans to customers with poor credit. in the name of fairness to minorities, community organizers occupy private offices, chant inside bank lobbies, and confront executives at their homes – and thereby force financial institutions to direct hundreds of millions of dollars in mortgages to low-credit customers. in other words, community organizers help to undermine the us economy by pushing the banking system into a sinkhole of bad loans. and obama has spent years training and funding the organizers who do it.”

SECONDLY, obama denies training acorn staff on his fight the smears web site. this is really quite damaging to obama because it is unequivocally clear that acorn’s toni foulkes says obama did in fact train acorn staff. obama is now currently spreading a politically expedient lie to the american public.

these are two facts the obama camp do not want people to know, as they would severely weaken his position on the economy. it would expose obama as one who actually contributed to the subprime loan financial crisis.

case study: chicago-the barack obama campaign

acorn’s history of nonpartisan electoral work (voter registration and voter turnout) and leadership development combined during the march, 2004 primary season to make a big difference in the level of participation of our communities in that important election.

acorn is active in experimenting with methods of increasing voter participation in our low and moderate income communities in virtually every election. BUT IN SOME ELECTIONS WE GET TO HAVE OUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO: WORK ON NONPARTISAN VOTER REGISTRATION AND GOTV, WHICH ALSO TURNS OUT TO BENEFIT THE CANDIDATE THAT WE HOLD DEAR.

the march primary was not particularly important for the presidential race, as kerry was just in the process of clinching the dem presidential nomination. but it was critical in the u.s. senate race. on march 16th, state senator barack obama won the right to represent the democratic party in the u.s. senate campaign. jack ryan won the republican nomination that day, but went on to self-destruct over sex club revelations in his divorce papers. sen. obama went on to keynote the democratic convention in july and was catapulted to the national stage. as sen. obama puts it, how did a skinny kid with a funny name become the democratic candidate for the u.s. senate, with 53% of the statewide democratic vote in a seven-person field?

obama started building the base years before. for instance, acorn noticed him when he was organizing on the far south side of the city with the developing communities project. he was a very good organizer. when he returned from law school, we asked him to help us with a lawsuit to challenge the state of illinois’ refusal to abide by the national voting rights act, also known as motor voter. allied only with the state of mississippi, illinois had been refusing to allow mass-based voter registration according to the new law. obama took the case, known as acorn vs. edgar (the name of the republican governor at the time) and we won. obama then went on to run a voter registration project with project vote in 1992 that made it possible for carol moseley braun to win the senate that year. project vote delivered 50,000 newly registered voters in that campaign (acorn delivered about 5000 of them).

SINCE THEN, WE HAVE INVITED OBAMA TO OUR LEADERSHIP TRAINING SESSIONS TO RUN THE SESSION ON POWER EVERY YEAR, AND, AS A RESULT, MANY OF OUR NEWLY DEVELOPING LEADERS GOT TO KNOW HIM BEFORE HE EVER RAN FOR OFFICE. thus, it was natural for many of us to be active volunteers in his first campaign for state senate and then his failed bid for u.s. congress in 1996. by the time he ran for u.s. senate, we were old friends. and along about early march, we started to see that the african-american community had made its move: when sen. obama’s name was mentioned at our southside summit meeting with 700 people in attendance from three southside communities, the crowd went crazy. with about a week to go before the election, it was very clear how the african-american community would vote. but would they vote in high enough numbers?

it seemed to us that what obama needed in the march primary was what we always work to deliver anyway: increased turnout in our acorn communities. acorn is active on the south and west sides of chicago, in the south suburbs and on the east side of springfield, the state capital. most of the turf where we organize in is african american, with a growing latino presence in chicago’s little village and the suburbs.

acorn members were involved in three activities around the primary:

1) block captains were identified, as early as the summer before the march primary, and provided with lists of registered and unregistered voters and voter registration materials. we attended trainings and accountability meetings to receive our materials and make plans to get the people registered. then we came back to report on our progress. we also hired voter registrars in the final three weeks to work the supermarkets in our communities. by the february 17 voter registration deadline for the primary, acorn had registered 12,984 new voters. this was an organizational best for us. (as of this writing, we have added over 27,000 new voters).

2) block captains then went to work to turn out the vote. they were all volunteers until the last few days, when we received funding to pay some of our block captains in some precincts of the 24th ward (north lawndale) and the 15th ward (west englewood) to get out the vote on the last saturday before the election and on election day.

3) in some precincts in the 15th ward, we were able to hire canvassers to work on voter turnout for a full two weeks before the election. each canvasser worked two to three precincts during that time.

the results of this activity were very interesting, and mirror what professor donald green of yale university has found about voter turnout work: where we were able to run a crew of paid and supervised canvassers for two weeks before the election, we did very well. in those targeted acorn precincts in the 15th ward, voter turnout improved by an average of 50% over the previous year’s city election (the only other election since the redistricting). citywide turnout increased by only 14% over the same election.

the way the canvassers approached each door was important. instead of a speech about a candidate they engaged the potential voter in a conversation about the issues, relating their issues to the importance of voting, and moving them to a commitment to vote in the primary. in addition acorn leaders were making the rounds talking to their neighbors about the election. i am proud to report that the combination of a paid canvass and my volunteer work was especially successful in turning out the vote in my two precincts (34 and 51). in those precincts we boosted turnout by 82% (precinct 34) and 90% (precinct 51) over the previous year’s turnout. acorn leader denise dixon again paired with an effective canvasser, increased turnout in her precinct by 131%. the best performing precincts were the ones with a canvasser and a leader who worked at least election day and the saturday before. there is a noticeable difference between these precincts and those that only had a paid canvasser in it, who wasn’t a local community leader.

we’re not ready to prove anything yet with our data, because we have not run a scientific test, but we believe green’s results showing that door-to-door field work for two weeks before an election yields significant results, and we believe that there is a correlation with strong local leaders assisting the paid canvassing in winning even more dramatic increases.

the 24th ward has traditionally had higher voter turnout than in the 15th. the work leading up to the election in the 24th ward was done by leaders who volunteered their time. some were paid for two half days of door knocking, election day and the saturday before. turnout increased in acorn precincts in the 24th ward at a rate higher than the city average, but not at the rate at which it increased in the 15th. overall turnout was still higher in our 24th ward precincts than our 15th ward precincts, but the rate of increase was not as dramatic.

none of this is rocket science, but it is important. good door-knocking by community residents for even two half days can impact turnout. good door-knocking by paid and supervised canvassers for two weeks can have dramatic impact. and a combination of the two, especially with experienced community leaders working with the paid canvassers, can make a huge difference.

as it turned out, obama won the primary handily, pulling white wards as well as african american. but no one knew that that would be the case. in each election we must act as if our work is critical for our communities. that is what we did in the primary, and we learned something in the process.

three facts everyone needs to know about the current financial crisis:

fact 1: obama supported acorn through staff and leadership training and through the funding of acorn by the wood’s fund and annenberg challenge. acorn has a rich history of intimidating banks to lower their credit standards and issue subprime loans to customers with poor credit, which is the cause of the world financial crisis we find ourselves in. also, as an attorney in 1994 obama was involved in a lawsuit against citibank to force it to make a bad loan, charging the bank was ‘discriminatory’.

acorn is known for it’s militant tactics of intimidation and disruption in forcing banks to issue subprime loans to uncreditworthy customers. when obama was a young community organizer, madeline talbott of chicago’s acorn had obama train her personal staff. he later did legal work for acorn in the illinois ‘motor voter’ case, led ‘project vote’ in 1992, ran leadership training seminars for acorn leaders, funded acorn though the wood’s fund which he supervised, and as leader of the chicago annenberg challenge he channeled more funds to madeline talbott and acorn. obama’s lack of knowledge and judgment in supporting acorn’s push to get banks to lower their credit standards actually contributed to the financial mess we find ourselves in.

stanley kurtz of the washington post in “o’s dangerous pals – barack’s ‘organizer’ buds pushed for bad mortgages” writes:

“when obama was just a budding community organizer in chicago, talbott was so impressed that she asked him to train her personal staff.

he returned to chicago in the early ’90s, just as talbott was starting her pressure campaign on local banks. chicago acorn sought out obama’s legal services for a “motor voter” case and partnered with him on his 1992 “project vote” registration drive.

in those years, he also conducted leadership-training seminars for acorn’s up-and-coming organizers. that is, obama was training the army of acorn organizers who participated in madeline talbott’s drive against chicago’s banks.

more than that, obama was funding them. as he rose to a leadership role at chicago’s woods fund, he became the most powerful voice on the foundation’s board for supporting acorn and other community organizers. in 1995, the woods fund substantially expanded its funding of community organizers – and obama chaired the committee that urged and managed the shift.

that committee’s report on strategies for funding groups like acorn features all the key names in obama’s organizer network. the report quotes talbott more than any other figure; sandra maxwell, talbott’s acorn ally in the bank battle, was also among the organizers consulted.

more, the obama-supervised woods fund report ac knowledges the problem of getting donors and foundations to contribute to radical groups like acorn – whose confrontational tactics often scare off even liberal donors and foundations.

indeed, the report brags about pulling the wool over the public’s eye. the woods fund’s claim to be ‘nonideological,’ it says, has “enabled the trustees to make grants to organizations that use confrontational tactics against the business and government ‘establishments’ without undue risk of being criticized for partisanship.”

hmm. radicalism disguised by a claim to be postideological. sound familiar?

the woods fund report makes it clear obama was fully aware of the intimidation tactics used by acorn’s madeline talbott in her pioneering efforts to force banks to suspend their usual credit standards. yet he supported talbott in every conceivable way. he trained her personal staff and other aspiring acorn leaders, he consulted with her extensively, and he arranged a major boost in foundation funding for her efforts.

and, as the leader of another charity, the chicago annenberg challenge, obama channeled more funding talbott’s way – ostensibly for education projects but surely supportive of acorn’s overall efforts.

in return, talbott proudly announced her support of obama’s first campaign for state senate, saying, ‘we accept and respect him as a kindred spirit, a fellow organizer.’

in short, to understand the roots of the subprime mortgage crisis, look to acorn’s madeline talbott. and to see how talbott was able to work her mischief, look to barack obama.

then you’ll truly know what community organizers do.”

obama and ACORN have worked closely forcing banks into giving loans to those who cannot afford them, which led to our current economic disaster. bank intimidation is a primary goal of acorn and its members. what is obama’s goal?

while an attorney with the chicago law firm davis, miner, barnhill and galland, obama was part of a team of lawyers that sued citibank for practicing ‘redlining’ (loan discrimination) in the case ‘buycks-roberson v. citibank fed. sav. bank‘. they won and it essentially forced citibank to give a bad loan. this kind of loan practice is the root cause of the current financial crisis we find ourselves in. ACORN specializes in intimidating banks to give bad loans, abusively using the CRA (the community reinvestment act) to scare banks to comply. in a november 2007 meeting with ACORN, obama said: “i’ve been fighting alongside acorn on issues you care about my entire career. even before i was an elected official, when i ran project vote voter registration drive in illinois, acorn was smack dab in the middle of it, and we appreciate your work.“
